Is it a fair trade? Remote trade in Pokemon GO #pokemon #pokemongo #pogo #pokemoncommunity

In today’s episode of Is It a Fair Trade?, we have another Pokémon GO remote trade that sounds much better on paper than it actually turns out to be! I received a remote trade request from another Pokémon GO player who was interested in some of my rarer Pokémon, including my Galarian Zapdos, Shiny Gigantamax Gengar, and Shiny Growlithe. But before accepting any trade in Pokémon GO, I always check what the other trainer has available because the Pokémon they are offering can make a huge difference when deciding whether a trade is actually worth it.

When I checked their Pokémon collection, things were looking pretty disappointing. They didn’t have any Shiny Gigantamax Pokémon, they didn’t have any interesting Dynamax Pokémon, they didn’t have any Galarian Birds to offer, and there weren’t really any other extremely rare or valuable Pokémon that immediately caught my attention. If I traded away something like a Galarian Zapdos or Shiny Gigantamax Gengar, I would definitely want something much more interesting in return. Those are Pokémon that I would want something significantly more valuable or interesting for, especially when they are difficult to replace.

So instead of giving away one of my rarest Pokémon, I decided that the Shiny Growlithe was the most reasonable option. Growlithe is still a cool shiny and I was willing to trade it, but I wanted to see what kind of shiny Pokémon this trainer had available in return. After looking through their collection, I decided to go with Shiny Tyrantrum.

There was also another reason I picked this particular Pokémon. I actually like keeping low CP Pokémon for defending gyms in Pokémon GO. Lower CP Pokémon can be useful for gym defending because they require fewer berries to restore their motivation compared with higher CP Pokémon. So even though the Shiny Tyrantrum wasn’t some incredibly rare Pokémon that would normally make me immediately trade away a Shiny Growlithe, it was something I could actually see myself using.

The other trainer accepted the trade, so there was no going back. Now it was time to find out what IVs the Shiny Tyrantrum had. The appraisal came back at 13/13/13. That’s a pretty solid result for a random trade, although the IVs weren’t really the most important part of this trade. With a trade like this, I’m much more interested in the Pokémon itself, its rarity, whether I actually wanted it, and whether I feel like I received something comparable in return.

This is exactly what makes Pokémon GO trading so interesting. A trade isn’t always about which Pokémon has the highest CP or the best IVs. Sometimes a Pokémon can have sentimental value, a rare shiny, a special background, a costume, a Gigantamax or Dynamax form, or simply be something that you have been looking for. Pokémon GO trade value can be extremely subjective, and what one trainer considers a fair trade might be completely different from what another trainer would accept.

In this trade, the choices were pretty clear. Galarian Zapdos was staying in my collection, and Shiny Gigantamax Gengar was definitely staying as well. Those are Pokémon that I would want something significantly more valuable or interesting for. Shiny Growlithe, however, was much easier to let go of, especially when I found a Shiny Tyrantrum that I could use for gym defending.

But was a Shiny Growlithe for Shiny Tyrantrum actually a fair trade in Pokémon GO? Was choosing the low CP Shiny Tyrantrum a smart decision? Would you have accepted this trade, or would you have kept the Shiny Growlithe? And if someone offered you a Shiny Tyrantrum for one of your Shiny Growlithe, would you consider it an equal trade?
